As a child, he was captivated by technology, particularly the Commodore 64 computer, which provided him with a platform to experiment and create abstract digital drawings. Over the years, his fascination with technology has only grown, leading him to incorporate various mediums such as code, robotics, augmented reality, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence into his artistic practice. While some may view this as a departure from traditional art forms, it is, in fact, a reflection of David’s unyielding curiosity and love for innovation. His East-Central European heritage continues to be a significant influence in his work.
David Szauder specializes in the creation of digital images and animations, combining analogue inputs with code-based parameters. He adopts a wide-ranging style and a free-form aesthetic in his approach to digital collage, transcending traditional mediums. David has applied this technique to a number of projects, including a reinterpretation of Leonardo da Vinci’s non-existent machine in Milan as an AR experience and a reimagining of László Moholy-Nagy’s Light Space Modulator as a monumental kinetic sculpture. His digital collages often reflect personal experiences, emotions, and questions, pushing the boundaries of what is possible with this medium. One of David’s most successful series, “Failed Memories,” was released in 2013 and was inspired by the striking similarities between human memory and computer memory. Much like a computer stores files on a hard drive, the human brain stores images and experiences for future recall. However, much like corrupted files on a computer, our memories can become fragmented and altered over time, leading to a loss of detail and accuracy. Even photographs, while they may initially spark vivid recollections, inevitably fade with the passage of time, leaving only fragmented, self-generated memories in their wake.

David Szauder always adds a descriptive narrative to accompany each of his photographs, offering an imagined glimpse into the subject’s altered appearance and mental state. For instance, a regular churchgoer may start doubting themselves, a group of friends may become absorbed in their discussion of metaphysics, or a glamorous woman may be driven to paranoia by the bubbles in her champagne.
