Roots of Creativity: A Childhood Shaped by Nature and Artistry
Lina Kusaite’s journey as an artist is deeply rooted in her upbringing in Kaunas, Lithuania, during the Soviet Union era. Immersed in a family of creatives—including architects, painters, jewelers, and graphic designers—she was surrounded by artistic expression from an early age. Her grandfather, an architect and painter, along with her parents and extended family, played a pivotal role in shaping her artistic instincts. Growing up amidst lush forests, expansive fields, and a vibrant garden filled with flowers and fruit trees, Lina developed an intrinsic connection with nature that continues to inspire her work. This environment cultivated her appreciation for natural diversity and its interconnected systems, themes that later became central to her art.
At the age of 10, Lina began formal art training at a local school, delving into disciplines like watercolor, drawing, anatomy, ceramics, and sculpture. She later graduated as a ceramist and sculptor, before pursuing fashion design at Vilnius Art Academy. Driven by curiosity rather than prior knowledge, she explored the world of clothing design, ultimately completing her education in Utrecht, Netherlands, with a European Master of Arts in Fashion and Textile Design. Her academic achievements were crowned with a nomination for the prestigious Prince Bernard Prize. This eclectic blend of experiences laid the foundation for her multidisciplinary approach, integrating art, nature, and storytelling.

Lina’s art traverses two main themes: the fantastical and the ecological. Since childhood, her imagination has conjured characters, worlds, and objects that transcend the mundane. Her work in fantasy illustration allows her to bring life to these imaginings, merging human and plant anatomies to craft mesmerizing hybrids. Whether illustrating fairy tales, fiction, or creating concept art for video games, Lina excels in hinting at otherworldly possibilities while leaving room for the viewer’s interpretation. Her detailed compositions brim with organic forms, ensuring each piece invites exploration.
Equally important is her exploration of nature’s ecosystems and humanity’s relationship with the environment. Inspired by “The One-Straw Revolution” by Masanobu Fukuoka, Lina delved deeper into the intricacies of ecological systems and their relevance to human life. Her works and workshops aim to bridge the growing disconnect between people and the natural world, using plant ecosystems as metaphors for balance and interdependence. Through projects that blend fantasy with environmental advocacy, Lina communicates the urgency of reconnecting with wilderness in ways that are not only enlightening but also profoundly personal and collaborative.
Expanding Horizons: Notable Projects and Techniques
Lina’s portfolio reflects an impressive range of mediums and concepts, with three projects holding special significance. Her series “Alternatives,” commissioned by PointCulture in Brussels, explored humanity’s evolving relationship with nature. Through magazine covers blending human, plant, and animal forms, Lina addressed the philosophical questions of identity and interconnectedness, challenging viewers to reconsider their place within the larger universe.
Another standout project, “Magical World of Nature,” was a mural commissioned for a Dutch restaurant chain. The artwork fused plants, insects, corals, and human forms into a single tapestry of life, later transformed into ceramic tiles. Similarly, her collaboration with Xitan Hotel in Beijing showcased her ability to blend artistic craftsmanship with large-scale architectural projects. The lobby mural, inspired by Tanzhe Temple carvings, featured minimalist botanical motifs rendered using the ancient cloisonné technique, combining tradition with contemporary aesthetics. Recognized internationally, this project was a testament to her collaborative spirit and mastery of different materials.
Beyond traditional techniques, Lina has also experimented with media such as embroidery, ceramics, 3D printing, and digital tools, adapting her style to fit each unique context. Her preferred tools—pencil, watercolor, and Photoshop—remain central to her artistic process, but her openness to innovation ensures her work evolves with each new challenge.

This dream underscores her commitment to intertwining art with ecological awareness. Additionally, she yearns to undertake more large-scale projects akin to her work for the Xitan Hotel—endeavors where her creative freedom and technical mastery can shine in full force.
